ELEVATION RANGE:  1,200-6,200 ft

ENVIRONMENT:  Wet forests Hawaii island. 

Large tree species, requires wet environment, in cooler climates or in areas above 1000 feet elevation.


They handle sunny environments, given enough water at the roots, but they thrive in shady areas and in filtered sunlight.

Maintenance is limited when planted in good wet location.


Pilo thrives in wet environments and low light levels.


It is ornate, colorful when in fruit.


Fruits are attractive to wildlife (birds).


The tree grows slow and lives long.
