LIFE FORM:  SHRUB - WET TO MESIC FOREST UNDERSTORY

ELEVATION RANGE:  1200 - 4500 FT

ENVIRONMENT:   THIS RELATIVE OF THE AFRICAN VIOLET IS FOUND
NATURALLY IN AREAS PROTECTED FROM WIND, BELOW GROUND LEVEL, (IN CRATERS, LAVA FLOW TRENCHES, ETC.) LOW-LYING AREAS,  RELATIVE TO SURROUNDING TERRAIN.



ILIHIA roots find their way through forest litter and soils, especially around hapu`u tree ferns.  Branches grow towards sunlight or gaps in forest tree-top coverage (canopy).

Flowers and fruits are hidden under broad leaves, fruits hang like egg-shaped pearls.


Plant in humid, shady and uncrowded spot under hapu`u and other forest shrubs and trees.

Keep away from full sunlight, wind exposed areas, and areas that frequently dry out.
